If you are going to buy your kid a Nintendo DS / iPhone / weird techie game thing I've never seen before, then please buy them the matching headphones. I don't need to spend my bonus time at the airport (read: flight delayed 2.5 hours...and counting) listening to their game plink, boing, or clang.
