Orientation is ________________.
(Feel free to specify what type of orientation you are referring to-- new faculty, grad school, job, etc. etc.)
I suspect that many of you are in some type of orientation this week. Sorry. Oh, and if you are one of those senior (or junior?) faculty inflicting, I mean, informing new faculty/grad students/post-docs of various departmental policies... well.... enjoy the free food.

"Orientation is draining." I had to lead an orientation last year and I just crashed on my bed afterwards, since it was so tiring.
"Orientation is mindnumbingly boring until it's time for the tenure and promotion info ... or lunch."

"Orientation is a good place to catch up on sleep and get free food."
At least that's what my grad school orientation was all about.
"Orientation is a good way to meet new people"
I met one of my best friends at the orientation for international students at the U we attended abroad. That year was much better thanks to her. And this year, she was my maid of honor :)
Orientation... isn't until the last week of September when the undergrads return (before you all get too envious, I was dealing with exam rubbish until at least the end of June, things drag oooonnnnnnnnnnn here).
However, many of the grad students will start on the 1st. Hence, they will be oriented by orientation, but still have to go. And all the supervisors who oriented them will NOT be invited and will NOT get free food. The only bit I'll miss is the chocolate brownies, campus catering makes a very high class brownie... maybe one of the students will acquire one for me if I ask nicely???
Orientation is where the partying happens. At least, that's what it seems like in my alma mater and what it looks like here.
No free anything for the staff, though I have to admit that I usually volunteer for at least one student society, which gets me free stuff and discounts later on in the year.
I have to say I helped in the new graduate student orientation here, but my heart wasn't in it and I didn't socialize much. I've been here too long to take too much of the bright eyed optimism!
Now that I'm no longer a student first-year faculty...orientation is a time to eat too many cookies from campus catering while crowded in the back of the room while waiting your turn to introduce yourself to the new gaggle of grad students who can't see you anyway through the crowd.
But the cookies are good.
Orientation is just plain horrible, especially if you have to go around in a circle, stand up and state your name and information about yourself. I am referring to every orientation I've ever sat through. Cookies help though.
Orientation is something I cannot be bothered to attend...hehe. The snacks aren't even tempting me anymore. Scary.
"Orientation is happening without me this year."
Oh, I'm dreadfully sorry, I would have loved to play my role of "look! There's a woman in the department! And she's not even Asian! Use her as a role model!" but I will still be away at this time. Bummer!
(Orientation for incoming grad students when I was an incoming grad student was pretty cool in that I met people I'm very close to now. On the other hand, I met them on the second day and on the first day I cried my heart out at the idea that the people I met were my peers.)(
"Orientation is the end of a peaceful summer"
The free food wasn't even that good this year, and the new students seem so young that it's just depressing.
