You must not have gone to a public school!

...or so sayeth the CNN news anchor.

A guest came on the show to do a bit about NYE celebrations around the world.  At the end of the segment, the guest told the host some New Year's greetings in several different languages.

The anchor's response?

"Wow.  You must not have gone to a public school like me! I don't know any of those languages."

WTF? Is that a slam against land grant colleges or public education in general. In either case WTF?

I have no idea! I actually backed up the DVR because I wasn't sure if my not-so-caffeinated self heard correctly.

I was curious as to how other people interpreted her comments.

I've heard similar comments ("please correct my math, I went to public school")...

Dr. S used to get tons of derogatory comments at Snooty U about how 'easy' OSU must have been. Because it's so easy to be at the top of the heap among 30,000 undergrads, as opposed to my small private college where they rescheduled classes for me twice because I was 12.5% of my year's chem majors.

Heh!

I found out a year or two into my undergrad degree that some of the private school kids on my course assumed I was "one of them" because I was getting such good grades. They couldn't believe that I'd gone to my local state school. On the flip side, a couple of the private school kids I knew who weren't on my course and who did know I'd gone to a normal school acted really suprised to be told I was in the top three students on my course - they assumed that I couldn't possibly do better than kids who'd had all the benefits of a private education! So this kind of comment really doesn't surprise me at all :)

To follow up a bit -- I've never noticed such a difference in Germany. Private schools are quite rare there though, and then often follow specific educational themes (e.g. Montessori), they're not necessarily known for "higher quality", however one would measure that. Nobody at university would care about that. However, people would boast about coming from a particular state that supposedly has higher standards than others (most educational issues are decided on the state, not the federal level)... and then be surprised if someone from a "lower" state got better grades, sort of like what Cath described.

I discovered out a season or two into my basic level that some of the personal learners on my course believed I was "one of them" because I was getting such a's and b's. They couldn't believe that I'd gone to my regional condition institution. On the other hand, a number of the personal learners I realized who weren't on my course and who did know I'd gone to a regular institution functioned really suprised to be informed I was in the top three learners on my course - they believed that I couldn't perhaps do better than children would you had all the advantages of a personal education

Dr. S used to get plenty of derogatory feedback at Snooty U about how 'easy' OSU must have been. Because it's so simple to be at the top of the pile among 30,000 undergrads, in contrast to my little personal higher education where they rescheduled sessions for me twice because I was 12.5% of my seasons chem majors.

I apparent out a division or two into my basal akin that some of the claimed learners on my advance believed I was "one of them" because I was accepting such a's and b's. They couldn't accept that I'd gone to my bounded action institution. On the added hand, a cardinal of the claimed learners I accomplished who weren't on my advance and who did apperceive I'd gone to a approved academy functioned absolutely suprised to be abreast I was in the top three learners on my advance - they believed that I couldn't conceivably do more good than accouchement would you had all the advantages of a claimed education
