You probably already know that I'm not a morning person.
In the morning, I'm on automatic pilot until I get my coffee. Which is at work. (Mostly because if I had coffee here, I wouldn't have much of a reason to go in, would I?)
I have a big problem. I live with a morning person. No, not N.A.
My dog.
My dog is more cheery than the secretary in Office Space. I have never seen a creature more excited about the morning. He bounds out of his crate, panting with excitement. I'm still trying to get my pupils calibrated against all the offensive light streaming in the windows. (Must invest in blackout curtains.)
Even though I've had the puppy for almost eight months, I'm still getting used to having something THAT excited to see me every morning.
If only I could transfer some of that enthusiasm for life from my dog to my students!

This is so true for me also. I find this an interest blog and I'm bookmarking it for later reading. Maybe you can go to my blog and leave me a comment if you like it or not. I just started it. http://bit.ly/dcpZPS
I often get emails from postdocs or professors between 5 and 7 in the morning. I just don't get it.
I try to go to bed at a semi-decent time, but even then I'm so not a morning person. That's also the main reason I don't have a dog. They need to be walked before work, which inevitably means waking up even earlier than I do now...
I know, my monster is ready ot go at 6:00 a.m., rain or sun, snow or rain, -25 or +25. I am on automatic pilot when I take him out. I become a normal person one hour and a half later, after shower and breakfast. After 5 years of this life, I still love him dearly!
OA, sometimes people REALLY need to convince others that they are Really Hard Workers. A small subset of the population actually works well at 5 am, but I think most early morning emails are sent for the former reason.
PhDLadybug: Puppy used to be on the 6 am kick. Now I keep him up until midnight on weekends so I can "sleep in" until 8:30 am. Definitely an improvement from a few months ago!
I like to think I'm a morning person, because that's the time I function best, but it still takes me about an hour, including coffee, to become fully awake. Does this mean I'm not a morning person?
You need to get a cat instead.
I get up at an absolutely evil time of day due to my husband's work schedule. It's completely contrary to my natural night-own tendencies, and I spend the first 20 minutes or so after my husband leaves just sitting on the sofa looking vacantly into space. During this time, my cats like to come and snuggle quietly up against me. When I finally get up and start moving around, they go crazy and start running, chasing and wrestling, but never until the kettle is at least on for tea.
