The World Cup is Wack

Every four years, they come out of the woodwork: fair weather football fans.

It's just like when your regional baseball team makes it to the playoffs and suddenly everyone is a fan... only fair weather soccer fans are 204 times more annoying, mostly because the Cup goes on for so damn long.

Stop quoting scores and bitching about unfair penalties. Stop trying to convince others that you are the BIGGEST SOCCER FAN EVAH!! Please stop complaining about the effin' vuvuzelas.

Seriously, just STFU and get back to work already.

I think we need vuvuzelas at faculty meetings.

I happen to like soccer (futbol) for a couple of reasons, most notably for the acting, but I would be outraged if I actually loved the sport rather than merely enjoying it.

IMHO, the appearance of HD TV will be the death of world soccer as it currently exists. Replays in baseball show the ump usually gets it right. Replays in soccer usually show that there was no foul, and sometimes no contact at all! One guy put his hand on his head on the spot where the ball hit him, not on the spot where an arm bumped him. Other reactions look like fake hits in a movie fight, with inches between the "hit" and the "injury". Even basketball has higher standards than that for a foul, let alone an ejection.

If injured players had to leave the game for good, there would be less bad acting. Even less if they got a red card for faking it. Basketball long ago added a ref so there was always one on the "off" side of the play.

In my opinion the point of a game/sport is to win or lose. I refuse to support a game that accepts a "draw" as an acceptable outcome. Give me (American) Football anyday!

Yeah, let's send all those pesky Europeans and Hispanics back home so that they wouldn't dare to bother us with their discussions of their un-American sports!

Clarissa, you are misinterpreting my words. I am talking about those people who ONLY start caring about soccer during the world cup weeks. (hence the "fair weather" notation)

Fans care about their sport no matter what the year. Team sucks? You still flaunt their jersey. Not a cup year? You still talk about scores and watch games.

I don't like to define people by race or country of origin... but if you insist, then I should clarify that I am talking about US-born students and faculty (and one Canadian). I'm not going to be more specific than that.

Doctor Pion, I actually think soccer is pretty darn interesting to watch. Indeed, the acting on the field often parallels nicely with certain faculty meetings!

J, I think draws have their place, and it certainly is better than some of the overtime rules implemented in various college sports!
