Now imagine if we had to do that at faculty meetings.
Most of the time, not-so-nice things are said at faculty meetings. Hell, most of the time we DON'T have much for which we can give thanks.
So imagine that you're at a faculty meeting (or group meeting). Go get an extra piece of pie if it helps. What do YOU need to give thanks for this year?

I give thanks for the post-docs in my lab who form an amazing support system as we all try to cope with an abusive, blackmailing boss.
I am grateful that I have the best advisor in the world.
I couldn't really say that at group meeting without being accused of ass-kissing. The nice thing about writing under a pseudonym is that I can honestly say how much my advisor rocks...people know that if I thought she sucked, I would say it.
Sadly, I was at an official gathering (not in my department) where we had to do something that was pretty close to that. At least I got some free pizza.
What I need to give thanks for is that I am in a department where we have fewer faculty meetings than we have gatherings that allow me to take an extra piece of pie. Seriously. Just this past week I had a slice of homemade pecan pie before giving an exam, and another slice after.
How about some thanks to the friggin' turkey that gave it's life (ok, maybe we took it) so we can eat and complain how not optimally it's been cooked!
