Students are out to get us!

...or at least that is how it feels sometimes.

Faced with a classroom full students armed with bored faces, armed with texting weapons, teaching can sometimes take an "us versus them" tone.

But just like professors aren't plotting against students, our classes don't meet in the dark of night to plan against us.

The Forbes article is an interesting read.  I wonder what the student version would include?

I'm still closer to student than prof, so the piece comes off as well meaning but too patronizing to be useful. Unless it's purpose has nothing to do with students, but just making profs feel better (entirely likely, given my impression of Forbes writers and readership- writing for an audience that is never going to be able to see/appreciate your work seems to be a theme there)...but anyway. A student version. hmmm...

First, I earn a grade by demonstrating I have attained a degree of competence in your field ranging from articulating the basic principles in terms you find permissible (enough to earn a C) to an arbitrary benchmark of 'mastery' you have set and the ability to demonstrate to your satisfaction my ability to apply these principles to the day-to-day affairs you deem worth applying them to (which will earn an A- provided you didn't just receive news that your grant wasn't funded, weren't kept up all night by a new baby or the nighbor's dog, and haven't just been diagnosed with inoperable cancer).

Second, the burden of proof that your teaching has any effect at all is on you to demonstrate that at least some of your students master the material.
In light of this, consider that your public speaking skills leave something to be desired. Don't take that personally or interpret it as a sneer. See it as a learning opportunity. If you presented the material clearly- and do note that there is a large difference between what somebody who already understands the material perceives as clearly and actually facilitating comprehension in the uninitiated- you would have the entire class producing work that could be published in the top scholarly journals in the field by the end of the semester.
