Hi Dr. R, what's up? I know you know this by now, but I didn't get a high enough grade in [part 1], at least that's what the registrar said. If you could please let me into your [part 2] class, I promise I will try hard. If the department still wants me to take [part 1] next fall, I totally will take it. Just please let me take this class so I can be a doctor just like my dad.
Thanx,
Undergrad
Best. Email. Ever.
Okay, so probably not, but I, like, totally enjoyed the fact that Undergrad thought that department's concern was not that Undergrad learned the material well enough to continue on in part 2, but that the student received a passing grade. Since it's, um, you know, a competition among departments as to which has the higher overall GPA. Ha.
I'm sure you've gotten an even more fabulous email from a student, coworker, PI...take your pick. In honor of the start of the spring semester, please share below!

For whatever reason, my 'real' boss likes to send out mass emails and cc select people on them. However, he doesn't do this consistently, so occasionally I will get emails that I haven't read the rest of. Once I got an email that said:
"What a fucking asshole!
Dr. BigWig
Chair of this, and several other departments."
I had to go to my immediate boss and ask what the hell I missed.
That is awesome, Geeka! Oh, how I have learned by the example of others of what NOT to put in writing....
Here's one from a student:
"now its says here the paper submissions are due or begin, im wonderin what exaclty that means. like i understand that its due or begins or what not but im confused as to what a paper submission is or even what th paper should have on it. i know instructions are probabl right in my face...but im not the brightest when it comes to things like this. so if i could get like a little bit more info it would be GREATLY appreciated."
T.H.E., did you then ask the student for "a little bit more info" as to what the HELL they are trying to ask? Good luck grading those future papers. Yikes. (I am looking forward to a whole semester of posted emails--modified to protect the innocent-- from you!)
that's a good one :)
That email was from several semesters ago...I saved it because it was the most entertaining one I've ever gotten.
I did respond and explain the paper, though I can't remember this student's final grade in the course. It definitely wasn't an A, though.
