Know why?
Because EVERY SINGLE service department from human resources to the dining services sent out an email today to inform me (and the rest of the faculty email list) this.
Clearly I need to reevaluate my email filters.

Around here, it's pretty much a non event (except daycare is closed). Up until a few years ago, they even had summer session classes on Memorial Day. So no emails in my box.
I think that is one of my furlough days and I am forbidden to work. I'm using it as an excuse to stay in PhDtown instead of heading back to the lab! (but I'll still be working)
